LGA Shark Shootout / Player of the Year

The LGA held their annual Shark Shoot Out Sunday September 21st to determine the Player of the Year. The Top ten point winners from the Tournament Season teed it up on the Weiskopf to play for “The Shark” and the 2014 Player of the Year title. There were plenty of great pressure shots by everyone in the group, but the real drama started on hole #4 with Dr. Joanne Schoen, still in the hunt for POY, got into an elimination chip off with Barb Gorka. Joanne chipped up to 3 feet and was able to advance to the next hole.

The Ladies of the Shark Shootout

Hole #5 was another key hole. With a blue pin all the way in the back, it was going to be a difficult hole for all. Diane Ritchie, the point leader, hit her tee shot to the left of the green. Electing not to chip over a bunker she instead played safely to the center of the green some 40 feet from the hole and now having to putt up the slope she had to be concerned whether she would advance to the next hole! As she lined up the putt the crowd could sense what was at stake with her next stroke. Diane hit a perfect putt, as it came up the slope it had a little too much speed but it was dead center – it hit the back of the cup jumped up in the air and fell in for a par 3!

Hole #6 produced birdie 3’s from Diane Ritchie and Karen Shiffler. Although Dr. Joanne Schoen advanced, by virtue of the points, the Player of the Year title went to Diane Ritchie.

Diane and Joanne then survived to the 9th hole where Diane beat Joanne to win the Shark Shoot Out!

Congratulations to Diane Ritchie and everyone who participated in this year's events. We look forward to 2015!

Men's Night Championship

This Wednesday marked the final week of the Men's Night league. Throughout the summer, the men gathered around 5:30 on Wednesday nights for a different nine hole game consisting of everything from scrambles, shambles, best balls, multiple tees, and any combination of the sorts. For the final "Championship Night" every man played their own ball to determine a final gross and net winner for the year.

Chuck Rotter fired a very respectable 40 on the front side of the Devlin course, but it was not enough to catch the eventual Men's Night gross champion Mike Manno. Mike fired a 1-over par 37 to take home the gross champion title.

On the net side, Ted Mangosh fired his number and recorded a net 36, but came up short to net champion Bob Dawson who fired a 42 net 34.

And what would such a big event be without some incredible trophies to commemorate such a big win!

Congratulations to both gentleman, and thank you to all of the men who came out every Wednesday to make it such a fun year!

MGA Player of the Year

This past weekend marked the end of the 2014 golf season for the Quail Hollow Men's Golf Associations. After another great season, it was time to determine which individual would take home the 2014 Player of the Year honor.

The MGA wrapped up their season on Saturday with the top 24 players from throughout the year competing in one last event to gain points towards P.O.Y. honors.  Mark Lodwick took home the title with a net 68 on the Devlin course, earning him an additional 150 points to qualify for the shootout!

Following the tournament, the Top 10 point leaders went directly into a shootout to ultimately determine who would take home the 2014 P.O.Y. title.  The ten men, followed by a substantial gallery, played the first 5 holes on the Devlin course, eliminating two men per hole.  The results were as follows:

1. Jim Raimondo
2. Bill Ritchie
T3. Jack Waterwash
T3. Pat Aquila
T5. Craig Dunlap
T5. Mark Lodwick
T7. Mike Manno
T7. Gary Greben
T9. Tony Humbert
T9. Kevin Huster

Congratulations to Jim Raimondo for taking home the shootout title!  However, after all points were calculated, the bonus points were not enough to take over the first place position.  With a total of 607.5 points, the 2014 MGA Player of the Year title goes to:

Mike Manno

Mike took home the title of First Flight Individual Match Play Champion, and The MGA Ryder Cup Champion along with his partner Pat Aquila this year. Congratulations Mike on a great year of golf!
